Character Information

Appearance: Matt is about 5'5"/168 cm, and 115lbs/52kg. His hair is a brown/auburnish colour (it varies about the fandom and never officially announced in the manga), and his eyes are never seen in canon due to his habit of wearing sports goggles constantly (possibly prescription?), however in an official piece of artwork drawn to appease the fans with a glimpse of Matt's face, it is revealed that his eyes are blue. With regards to clothes, he is always seen in jeans with horizontal line textures, a longsleeved striped shirt (colour also varies due to fandom, but in the anime is red/black), and is usually wearing a beige, fur-lined ski vest. Of course you cannot leave out the leather gloves and biker boots.
Matt is also often sporting either his PSP/DS-like handheld game, or a cigarette, although it is often times both. He also carries a gun along his back underneath his vest.

Personality: Matt is the kind of guy who you see walking down the street and think virtually nothing of. From what we know officially is that he detests going out, most likely both on his own and for social reasons, and that what he likes are video games. Matt is also not very talkative, and would much rather be left alone by those he is not familiar with on most occasions. When he does speak, he only says what is necessary, but that does not mean to say he is not thinking about what he sees or hears. As a gamer, the gears in his brain are constantly turning, but only about what he deems to be worth his attention. He is not highly motivated, despite his intelligence, so he won't be the guy to take charge of a situation (in chapter 83 of the manga, it is Mello who is driving, thus in control). One might also infer from the scenes seen in the manga/anime that he is quite knowledgeable in computers as well as other forms of technology, such as mics, monitors, etc. In addition to technology, Matt is also probably a bit of a grease monkey since his "ride" of choice is a musclecar, a dusty red 1969 SS Camaro.
Although no one knows for sure why, the only person Matt seems to take any sort of orders from is Mello. Otherwise he also doesn't seem the type to do that either. Mello says "I'll do this", Matt says "Gotcha". The most Matt ever elaborates unnecessarily or gives a slight personal opinion (also in chapter 83) is when he describes Misa as "a pretty cute Japanese woman". By saying this, it implies Matt's sexuality as straight, however one might also infer that his adding how 'strange it might be for him to say so' would suggest his bisexuality/asexuality, as well as his tendency to be more reserved.
Matt obviously has a decent sense of justice, but he is not the type who is willing to stick his neck on the line for just any cause. Unlike others (Mello, Near, etc), unless Kira had directly effected Matt's lifestyle, he's not the type to really get involved, and had Mello not recruited him, he probably would not have.

Abilities: Matt seems to be very content with his level of intelligence, and his games are his lifeline. He is never seen without his handheld game, unless he is driving. As far as other technology goes, there doesn't seem to be a trick in the book Matt doesn't know. Mics, cams, monitors. From images in the anime/manga he seems to be an expert in surveillance, and is probably a computer hacker or programmer.
For the game, as there will naturally be limited resources with regards to technology, and since the computers can only do so much, Matt's technological skills will be severely limited.

Weaknesses: Matt is a terrible chain smoker. He constantly has a cigarette in his mouth, on, or near him, and withdrawal of such would certainly make him very unhappy. He also seems to be very easily distracted by his video games at times, which has caused him to mess up a job. Ultimately it is Matt's loyalty to Mello that kills him, but this is not to say that Matt is careless or blinded. Matt was certainly aware of the possibility of death, but with the few interactions seen between Matt and Mello, there is evidently a great deal of trust between them. Had anyone else suggested the plan to kidnap Takada, or even to catch Kira, Matt would have certainly said "hell no" and gone back to his games.

History: From what we know for certain about Matt's history, he grew up at Wammy's with Mello and Near. Anything prior is unknown. We can assume that he had aspirations to become the next L, but he was probably just as neutral about it as he is everything else. Matt is third in line to become the next L after Near and Mello. Although it is certain that Mello and Matt's close friendship dates back to their Wammy days, it is unspecified whether they were roommates, a bully/henchmen duo, or had just been on the same dodgeball team once or twice.
There is no information about Matt's whereabouts after Mello leaves Wammy's and takes control of the Mafia. The first time we even see Matt with Mello is after he became too friendly with pyrotechnics and lost control of the Death Note, as well as exploded his henchmen. From this point on, we know that the two are working together as a team, but whether or not they were reunited because of chance or were actually in contact with one another long before is unspecified.
After Matt accidentally loses track of Misa and allows her and the Task Force members who were with her to return to Japan, him and Mello follow. Eventually a scheme is hatched, probably by Mello, to kidnap Takada. Matt serves as the decoy to draw the body guards away from Takada as Mello abducts her, with some small help from Halle. Unfortunately, Takada's body guards head Matt off and he is surrounded. Unable to do anything else, he steps out of the car, comments on the Japanese police and their pieces (the only exhibition of his sense of humor, which seems to be somewhat dry and boyish), and after he suggests that shooting him would be stupid because he's an accomplice who could reveal so much information to them, Matt is shot 13+ times and killed.
For the purposes of the game, Matt will be taken from before he and Mello leave for Japan, that way he's not dead. He ends up in Manhattan mysteriously after a car accident.
